Two Projects, Afghanistan
Compassion Beyond Borders has adopted two new partners in Afghanistan. Afghan Women Service and Education Organization (AWSE) will administer a literacy program for 400 young women and out-of-school girls that will qualify them to enter the Afghan public schools at a grade level appropriate for their age. CBB will also begin a tutoring program for ten women and girls in the shelter of the Family Guidance Center in Kabul.
Health Education, Uganda
Compassion Beyond Borders is beginning a new project of health education for women and children, especially teen-aged girls, in five villages of eastern Uganda. The project is a partnership with the Missionary Sisters Queen of the Apostles who will also provide health care to the villagers.
Education Centers, India
Five education centers are being constructed for women's literacy groups in rural villages north of Kolkata (Calcutta). These structures will be made of bamboo, with a metal roof and a concrete floor. The centers will also serve as places for communal events, such as meetings, weddings, etc.
School for the Blind, India
Compassion Beyond Borders will give scholarships to girls at a small school for the blind in India. There are currently seven girls at the school, but an expansion to 100 students is planned. The girls attend school with other children during the day, and then receive their special training after normal school hours.
Women's Literacy Groups, Nepal
The training of six self-help groups of low-caste women in Nepal in literacy, health care, women's rights and micro-business skills is being completed and the women are "graduating" into independent cooperatives.
CBB is now beginning the funding of six new groups of women from one of the most underprivileged social castes in Nepal--the Thami. This indigenous ethnic group lives in mountain villages 25 miles from the border with Tibet.
